A very warm welcome to the Old Cathedral / Ignatius Church Linz

We are delighted, that You are interested in our church in the heart of Linz today. The English section of this website is currently under construction.

However, here some basics regarding our cathedral:

The Old Cathedral is a church steeped in tradition: originally built by the Jesuit order at the end of the 17th century and consecrated to St. Ignatius, the Jesuits were active here until the dissolution of the Jesuit order in 1773.

After a transitional period, the church became the cathedral of the newly founded diocese of Linz in 1785. For 124 years, the Old Cathedral was the seat of the bishopric and seven Linz bishops worked here.

When the function of the cathedral was transferred to the newly built St. Mary's Cathedral, the Jesuits moved back into their magnificent religious church from May 1, 1909 and worked here until 2023.

Since September 1, 2023, the diocese has once again been directly responsible for our church as a rectorate church and the Old Cathedral is now also home to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Upper Austria.

English descrition Old Cathedral

With its rich tradition, shaped by the Jesuit order for more than 400 years,

our church is a living sign of the Christian faith, that has been cultivated here for centuries.

The liturgy that is celebrated here is an expression of this living faith. Everyone is cordially invited to take part in our Holy Mass and to experience and celebrate the Christian community together:

SUNDAY, 09.15 a.m. in the Old Cathedral

WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY and SATURDAY each at 09.00 a.m. in the Chapel of St. Mary

Our friends from the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic community of St. Josaphat celebrate Holy Mass in Ukrainian language  in the Byzantine rite every Sunday from 11.00 a.m. in the Old Cathedral.

Once a month we open our church during the evening hours:

NIGHT CHURCH:

The NIGHT CHURCH offers a space for inner contemplation and reflection that is open to everyone: people in search of peace, those interested in spirituality, but also tourists who want to switch off and organize their thoughts in a special ambience. Candlelight and quiet music create an atmospheric ambience that invites meditation and reflection.
In contrast to conventional church services, there are only a few fixed procedures in the night church. Visitors are invited - whether for just a few minutes or for a longer period - to find their own personal approach to silence and to experience the church space in a completely new way. And to end the day full of trust with a prayer, a beautiful encounter, a word for life.

Next dates:

Friday, 10. January between 8 pm and 11 pm

Friday, 14. February between 8 pm and 11 pm
